Abstract

Objective: To analyze the influence of internationalization and corporate governance on the corporate social responsibility of the largest Brazilian companies.

Method: Our quantitative and descriptive research adopted the use of secondary data related to corporate social responsibility, internationalization and governance of the 100 largest Brazilian companies, between 2015 and 2017. The data were processed through the difference tests between means (student's t) and multiple linear regression analysis with panel data.

Originality / Relevance: The research contributes to the disclosure of strategic and organizational management factors that influence the adoption of corporate social responsibility practices in Brazilian companies.

Results: The results revealed that companies with a higher level of internationalization and greater governance are likely to be more socially responsible. These results show that the corporate social responsibility level increases as they have foreign investors with equity participation, are listed on the stock exchange and issue ADRs, as well as when they have a higher governance index.

Theoretical / Methodological contributions: We contribute to the establishment of the relationship between corporate social responsibility, governance and internationalization in Brazilian companies, a field still lacking investigations. Our construction of variables contributes to future studies with these themes.

Social / Management Contributions: By linking the three constructs together, we provide clues for companies seeking to enhance their social responsibility and governance practices as a way to serve an even larger group of stakeholders gained through internationalization.
